“I’m not fucking joking.”

I bit back my smile as Mari paced in front of Reaper, Gunner, and Shadow, looking like the sexiest damn drill sergeant while the three of them stood stiffly at attention.

“You will not, under any circumstances, do anything stupid,” she continued, pinning each of them with a hard stare. “Such as getting yourself captured by the enemy.” Mari leaned aggressively into Gunner’s face. “Getting stabbed, shot, or anything else that would put you at risk of a life-threatening injury. That goes for all of you!” She whipped around to face me and I schooled my features too late. I’d been staring at her ass and she caught me. “I mean it, Jandro.”

“Yep, got it.” I resumed my attentive stance but there was no hiding my smirk at her sexy-angry face. “That’s why I’m hanging back on maintenance duty and not in the field killing some Blakeworth fucknuts.”

Mari’s features softened as she stepped closer toward me. “You understand why I can’t have all of you out on the battlefield, right? I just couldn’t handle the possibility of losing all of you.”

“‘Course I do.” I reached for her, my fingertips finding placement on the waist of her medic jumpsuit. “I’m happy to not be fighting, actually.”

“Really?” Her eyebrows jumped at that.

“Believe it or not, I actually don’t enjoy being shot multiple times or burned alive by explosives.”

“You’re not a great shot anyway,” Gunner jabbed, resting his hands on the multiple guns holstered at his belt.

“Yeah, come tell me that when your Mini jams up ‘cause you haven’t cleaned it.”

“Hey, I clean my shit!”

“You really should clean them more often,” Shadow muttered under his breath.

“I’m sorry, what?” Gunner whirled on him, incredulous.

“I’m just saying, you have a lot of guns and it’s been humid. They’re definitely accumulating moisture.”

“Alright, enough.” Reaper raised a hand to stop the bickering. “We need to go. Sugar?” His voice softened. “We’ll watch ourselves and we will come back. Promise.”

She nodded at him, her body language fidgeting as if she was unsure about reaching out to touch him or not. “You better.”

There was a tense moment of neither of them knowing what to do. Finally she rushed forward, squeezing him in a tight hug. Reaper wrapped an arm around her shoulders, the other around her back. His face lowered nearly to her shoulder, mouth angling toward her neck like he was going to kiss her there, but he stopped himself. Mari only squeezed him harder, the full length of her body pressing against his. For a simple hug, it was intense and sexually charged. Neither of them looked like they wanted to let go.

The other two and I looked on without comment, only patient curiosity. Mari and Reaper’s relationship was a component of us, a greater whole, while still being independently them at the same time. The issues they had affected us all, but it still felt wrong to step in. Fixing what had gone wrong took time, and there was nothing wrong with that. None
